Inverted Training Sessions
Brief description of the demonstration training session/presentation!
DEMO TRAINING SESSION/PRESENTATION
PREREQUISITES:
- Knowledge of Flipped Modules (please refer to more information below)
- LMS use and uploading of MP4 files
- Familiarity of using subtitles on a video
- Experience in using video platforms (Zoom) for recording with multiple screens
- Familiarity of implementing universal design for learning
OBJECTIVES:
- Determine how automatic subtitles on PowerPoint could assist in the learning process.
- Demonstrate how to activate subtitle functionality on PowerPoint.
- Create, record, and upload a flipped module with automatic subtitles on PowerPoint using a video platform (i.e. Zoom) on the LMS.
DESCRIPTION: Most flipped modules are recorded using PowerPoint slides. With limitations of providing an official closed captioning services, did you know that you can use the automatic subtitles in PowerPoint? In this micro-learning, you will be able to activate the subtitle option and use a video platform to record your flipped classes and have the automatic subtitle to work for you and your learners.
CATEGORY: Micro-Credentialing / Digital Badge
WHY? Though using the automatic subtitles from the PowerPoint program may meet certain ADA/WCAG standards, having this option available is beneficial for learners who have different abilities and preferences to learn from on-demand videos.
HOW? Through a demonstration on how to activate the subtitle option on PowerPoint and how to record, the participant then will demonstrate on how to do as such.
WHAT IF? Though the auto-captioning system is not 100% accurate, what if the program algorithm continues to develop that will eventually meet ADA/WCAG standards in a more consistent manner?
AGENDA: 2 Mins. - Icebreaker / Objectives (Please answer this link prior the scheduled session) [On Demand or Live]
1 Min. - Activating subtitles (Please watch the video below) [On Demand or Live]
3 Mins - Record using Zoom the presentation with automatic subtitles (Please refer to the Step-by-Step guide document below) [On Demand or Live]
4 Mins - QnA / Participants dictate the step-by-step of activating the subtitle and in recording the presentation with auto closed captioning. [Live]
Total = 10 Minutes
PROJECT: Using the LMS for this module, submit your own Zoom recording with closed captioning in PowerPoint. One slide will be sufficient with closed captions. Any topic will be accepted but preferably, you start on a project related to the course(s) you teach. Make sure your video is on so we can see that you are speaking.
RUBRIC FOR THE PROJECT:
Category
Subtitle Activation on PowerPoint
Meets
Zoom recording shows that the automatic subtitle is activated when the speaker is talking.
Does NOT Meet
Zoom recording does NOT show that the automatic subtitle does NOT display when the speaker is talking.
DIGITAL BADGE: If the project successfully meets the rubric, then the participant earns this digital badge.
Step-by-Step Guide for this tutorial is provided on the file below.
Articles / Video on Flipped Sessions
Flipped Training in Healthcare
Per our discussion, higher-order thinking skills (i.e. applying, creating, etc.) take place during live sessions (face-to-face or online). The study was a focus in the health care field to promote more student-centered learning activities (problem-based and research-based learning). If this is promoted in higher education learning, we ideally would promote this as a department with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Six Pillars of the Flipped Approach:

Flexibilizing and Customizing Flipped Sessions

Inverted Business Meeting
Focus on experiential learning which inverted/flipped training provides. Speaking of business meetings, below is a Ted Talks of doing flipped meetings. The idea is that the typical contents of a meeting is recorded in a video and then when teammates meet synchronously, they meet to make higher-order decisions such as a vote on what to do next and analyze the situation or problem better.
Perceptions and Emotions of Learners

21st Century Skills and Flipped Modules
Using inverted sessions, the 21st century skills needed (creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaborative skills, citizen competence, & development of character) is facilitated further. The study also proved that these are applicable regardless of educational level so this can also help professionals to continue to develop such skills.
